Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about gynaecology assessments, preparations, and booking.
How often should I have a routine gynaecological check-up?
It is recommended to have a gynaecological check-up and cervical screening every year depending on your age and clinical history, or sooner if you experience any irregular cycles, pain, or unusual symptoms.
When is the right time to seek a fertility assessment?
Generally, we advise seeking a fertility review if you have been trying to conceive for 12 months (or 6 months if you are over 35 years of age). Earlier assessments are recommended if you have known cycles irregularities or a history of pelvic conditions.
What preparation is needed for a pelvic ultrasound?
For a transabdominal pelvic scan, a full bladder is required. We recommend drinking about 500ml of water 30–45 minutes before your appointment. If a transvaginal ultrasound is recommended instead, no bladder preparation is required.
What is HyFoSy and when is it recommended?
HyFoSy (Hysterosalpingo-Foam Sonography) is a simple ultrasound procedure used to check whether the fallopian tubes are open. It is commonly recommended as part of fertility investigations and can usually be performed in the clinic without radiation or general anaesthesia.
Do you offer Mirena coil insertion?
Yes. We offer Mirena insertion and replacement at LifeScan.mt. The Mirena is a hormone-releasing intrauterine device (IUD) commonly used for contraception, heavy periods, and sometimes as part of hormone replacement therapy.
Do you offer contraceptive implants?
Yes. We offer contraceptive implant insertion and removal at LifeScan.mt. The implant is a small device placed under the skin of the arm which provides long-term contraception for up to 3 years.
What is a ring pessary and when is it used?
A ring pessary is a soft medical device placed inside the vagina to help support pelvic organs affected by prolapse. It can help relieve symptoms such as pressure, discomfort, or a dragging sensation, and is often a simple non-surgical option for women with pelvic organ prolapse.
