Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about women's ultrasound examinations, preparation, and booking.
Do I need a doctor's referral to book a women's ultrasound?
No, a doctor's referral is not required. You can self-refer for any of our diagnostic or screening women's ultrasound scans. We will provide you with a detailed clinical report that you can share with your gynaecologist or GP.
What is the difference between a transabdominal and transvaginal pelvic scan?
A transabdominal pelvic scan is performed over the lower abdomen and requires a full bladder. A transvaginal scan is an internal examination using a slender, specialized probe which provides significantly higher resolution views of the uterus, endometrium, and ovaries. It is performed with an empty bladder and is gentle and painless.
What preparation is required for my ultrasound scan?
Preparation depends on the examination. Abdominal scans require fasting for 4 hours (water is permitted). Transabdominal pelvic scans require a full bladder (drink 500ml of water 45 minutes prior). Transvaginal, breast, and thyroid scans require no special preparation.
Who performs the ultrasound scans at LifeScan?
All ultrasound scans at LifeScan Clinic Malta are performed and interpreted directly by registered, consultant radiologists, ensuring the highest standards of diagnostic accuracy in a private, supportive environment.
When will I receive my scan results?
Our consultant radiologist will discuss the key findings with you immediately following your scan. A comprehensive written medical report is completed and emailed to you on the same day.
