Preventative Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening
An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is a progressive swelling or bulge in the main blood vessel (aorta) that runs down from the heart through the abdomen. Because AAAs usually cause no symptoms until they become large or rupture, preventative screening is highly recommended—particularly for men aged 65 and over, and anyone with a history of smoking or a family history of aneurysms.
At LifeScan Malta, our consultant radiologists perform a quick, non-invasive ultrasound scan to measure the aorta diameter precisely, providing immediate results and a formal diagnostic report on the same day.
Aortic Assessment
Diameter Measurement
We trace the path of the abdominal aorta to measure its size and structure:
- Measurement of the maximal diameter of the infrarenal aorta
- Assessment of the aortic wall for calcification or mural thrombus
- Immediate categorization: Normal (< 3.0cm), Small (3.0-4.4cm), Medium (4.5-5.4cm), or Large (5.5cm or more)
Risk Factors & Screening
Who Should Book?
AAA screening is strongly advised for high-risk profiles, including:
- All men aged 65 and over (AAA is 6 times more common in men)
- Women aged 65 and over with a history of smoking or high blood pressure
- Anyone over 50 with a sibling or parent who has had an abdominal aortic aneurysm
Fasting Required
- Fasting Instruction: Please do not eat or drink anything (except plain water) for at least 4 hours before your appointment. This helps reduce bowel gas, which can block the sound waves from reaching the aorta.
- Medication: Take daily medications normally with a small sip of water.
- Duration: The scan is painless and takes only 10 to 15 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about AAA Screening (Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm).
What is an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)?
It is a widening or ballooning of the main blood vessel in the abdomen. If it grows too large, it is at risk of rupture, which is a life-threatening medical emergency.
What happens if an aneurysm is detected?
If the aorta is slightly enlarged, routine monitoring is recommended. If it is large (5.5cm or more), our radiologist will immediately arrange a referral to a vascular surgeon.
Is the scan covered by public screening in Malta?
LifeScan provides fast-access private screening, allowing you to bypass hospital waiting lists and receive immediate answers and a copy of the report.
