Advanced Abdominal and Pelvic Diagnostics
An abdomen & pelvis ultra sound scan is a vital medical tool used to evaluate the internal health of your major abdominal and pelvic organs. Since it uses high-frequency sound waves rather than radiation, this diagnostic scan is safe, painless, and highly detailed.
At LifeScan Malta, our abdominal and pelvic ultra sound assessments are performed by registered consultant radiologists. This ensures your imaging is interpreted in real-time by a medical expert, with a formal diagnostic report delivered directly to you on the same day.
Abdominal Assessment
Upper Abdominal Organs
We examine the structure, size, and condition of:
- Liver: Checking for fatty liver, cirrhosis, or lesions.
- Gallbladder: Screening for gallstones or inflammation (cholecystitis).
- Kidneys: Assessing for kidney stones, cysts, or blockages.
- Spleen & Pancreas: Evaluating size, cysts, or masses.
- Abdominal Aorta: Screening for enlargements (aneurysms).
Pelvic Assessment
Lower Pelvic Organs
We examine the reproductive and urinary systems:
- Urinary Bladder: Checking bladder volume, walls, and residual urine.
- Uterus & Ovaries (Women): Evaluating fibroids, uterine lining thickness, and ovarian cysts.
- Prostate Gland (Men): Screening size and structure via transabdominal scanning.
How to Prepare for Your Scan
An accurate abdomen & pelvis ultra sound relies heavily on proper patient preparation:
- Fasting (Upper Abdomen): Please do not eat or drink anything (except plain water) for at least 4 hours prior to your appointment. This prevents bowel gas and gallbladder contraction.
- Full Bladder (Pelvis): To clearly view the pelvic organs, drink 500ml of plain water 30–45 minutes before your scan. Do not empty your bladder before the scan begins.
- Medication: You may take your usual daily medications with a small sip of water.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about abdomen & pelvis ultra sound scans.
What is an abdomen and pelvis ultra sound scan?
It is a non-invasive, radiation-free diagnostic scan that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize the major internal organs of your abdomen and pelvic cavity, helping to identify the cause of symptoms like pain, bloating, or abnormal blood tests.
Why is fasting required before this ultra sound scan?
Fasting for 4 hours before your abdominal scan is essential. Eating or drinking causes the gallbladder to contract and empty, making it difficult to evaluate, and introduces air/gas into the stomach and bowel, which blocks the ultra sound waves from clearly visualizing deeper organs like the pancreas and aorta.
Why do I need a full bladder for the pelvic part of the scan?
A full bladder acts as a clear 'acoustic window', allowing the ultra sound waves to pass easily into the deep pelvis to visualize the bladder wall, uterus, and ovaries (in women) or prostate gland (in men). It also pushes away overlying bowel loops which otherwise block the view.
Do I need a GP or doctor referral to book?
No referral is required. We welcome self-referrals for screening or diagnostic assessment. If you do have a referral letter, please bring it with you so our consultant radiologists can address the specific clinical question.
How long does the scan take and when are results ready?
The scan typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. The consultant radiologist will discuss the preliminary findings with you in real-time. A formal written report is completed and emailed to you or your doctor on the same day.
