Advanced Thyroid and Neck Diagnostics
A thyroid & neck ultra sound scan is the gold-standard method for evaluating the structures of the neck. Using high-frequency sound waves, this non-invasive scan allows our medical specialists to inspect the thyroid gland, lymph nodes, and salivary glands in detail, without exposing you to radiation.
If you have felt a lump, experienced persistent throat discomfort, swelling, or have a history of thyroid disorders, a neck ultra sound at LifeScan Clinic provides swift, highly accurate answers. Every scan is performed and reported on the same day by a consultant radiologist.
Thyroid Gland Screening
Assessing Structure & Nodules
The thyroid gland regulates your metabolism. Our high-resolution scan evaluates:
- Thyroid Nodules: Characterizing lumps as solid, cystic, benign, or indeterminate using standard scoring models.
- Goiter: Evaluating gland enlargement and structural pressure on surrounding neck organs.
- Inflammatory Change: Visualizing signs of thyroiditis (such as Hashimoto's or de Quervain's thyroiditis).
Soft Tissue Assessment
Lymph Nodes & Salivary Glands
We examine the rest of the neck's structures to rule out infections, stones, or growths:
- Cervical Lymph Nodes: Checking for abnormal enlargement, swelling, or inflammatory features.
- Salivary Glands: Evaluating the submandibular and parotid glands for salivary stones (sialolithiasis) or swelling.
- Neck Lumps & Swellings: Determining if a lump is in the skin, muscle, gland, or soft tissue.
Zero Preparation Required
Unlike abdominal scans, a thyroid & neck ultra sound does not require fasting or a full bladder:
- No Fasting: You can eat and drink normally prior to your appointment.
- Clothing & jewelry: Wear a comfortable top with an open collar so the neck area is easily accessible. Please remove necklaces or throat jewelry before the scan.
- Time: The procedure takes around 15–20 minutes and is completely painless.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about thyroid & neck ultra sound scans.
What does a thyroid and neck ultra sound scan show?
This scan evaluates the thyroid gland (for size, nodules, cysts, or signs of thyroiditis) as well as the surrounding soft tissues, salivary glands, and lymph nodes in the neck. It is the primary imaging test for investigating any lump, swelling, or localized throat discomfort.
What preparation is needed for a neck ultra sound?
No special preparation is required. You do not need to fast and can eat, drink, and take medications normally. We recommend wearing a top with an open neck or collar (like a t-shirt or V-neck) and leaving necklaces or neck jewelry at home for easy access to the skin.
What are thyroid nodules and are they common?
Thyroid nodules are solid or fluid-filled lumps that form within the thyroid gland. They are extremely common, particularly in women, and the vast majority (over 90-95%) are completely benign. An ultra sound scan is the gold standard method for examining nodules to determine if further testing, such as a biopsy, is needed.
Who performs and reports my neck scan?
At LifeScan Malta, all neck scans are performed and reported in real-time by a consultant radiologist (a registered diagnostic doctor). They will explain the images to you during the exam and deliver a written report on the same day.
Do I need a doctor's referral to book?
No, a doctor's referral is not required. You can book an appointment directly through our online widget if you have noticed a lump, swelling, or simply want routine monitoring of an existing nodule.
