Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about ultrasound scans, prep guidelines, and booking details.

Do I need a doctor's referral to book an ultrasound?+

No, you do not need a referral. We accept self-referrals for screening and diagnostic scans, as well as referrals from family doctors, specialists, and midwives. A detailed diagnostic report is provided to you or sent directly to your doctor.

What preparation is required before an abdominal or pelvic ultrasound?+

For abdominal scans (e.g., liver, gallbladder), please fast (no food or drink except water) for 4 hours before your scan. For pelvic or urinary tract scans, a full bladder is required; try to drink 500ml of water 30–45 minutes prior to your appointment. Musculoskeletal, breast, and neck scans require no special preparation.

How long does an ultrasound scan take and when will I get results?+

Most scans take between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the complexity of the exam. Our consultant radiologists review the scan in real-time and discuss the findings with you during the visit. A formal, written diagnostic report is typically issued clearly and promptly on the same day.

Is an ultrasound safe for babies and children?+

Yes, ultrasound is completely safe, painless, and does not use any ionizing radiation. It is the gold standard for imaging in infants and children. Our clinic is designed to be child-friendly, and our radiologists are highly experienced in reassuring young patients.

What is Liver Elastography and do I need to prepare?+

Liver elastography (often called a FibroScan alternative) is a non-invasive technique that measures liver stiffness to assess for fibrosis or scarring. It requires very strict fasting of at least 4–6 hours (no food or drink, except water) and avoiding alcohol for 24 hours prior, to ensure accurate stiffness measurements.
