The standard first test from 40. If the radiologist needs an ultrasound too, it is added on the day, and only charged if done.

It acts as an additional safety tool and does not replace expert medical review. Studies have shown that AI breast cancer detection support may help improve early detection, particularly in dense breast tissue.
What is a 3D Mammogram (Tomosynthesis)?
A 3D mammogram (tomosynthesis) is an advanced imaging technology that takes multiple low-dose X-ray images of the breast from different angles. These images are reconstructed into thin layers, allowing radiologists to scroll through breast tissue slice by slice. Do I need a doctor's referral to book a breast scan?
No. You do not need a referral to book a breast ultrasound or a 3D mammogram at LifeScan. Many women book their screening or assessment directly, and our radiologist will guide you to the appropriate scan or procedure. If you do have a referral from a GP, gynaecologist, or breast surgeon, we will ensure they receive a copy of your report. However, if you plan to claim on health insurance, your insurer may require a referral letter from your GP or another doctor who is not the radiologist you are seeing, so please check with them first.
Can I book a mammogram online?
Yes. You can book a 3D mammogram, breast ultrasound or combined mammogram and ultrasound directly online at any time, choosing your own date and time slot from our live booking calendar. Your appointment is confirmed straight away, with no need to wait for a call-back.
How long does a mammogram take, and does it hurt?
A mammogram appointment takes about 15 to 20 minutes in total, with the active scan taking only a few seconds per view. During the scan, the breast is briefly compressed between two plates. Compression can cause brief discomfort or a feeling of pressure, but it should not be painful. Our experienced radiographers work carefully to ensure you feel as comfortable as possible.
When will I receive my breast scan results?
We understand that waiting for results can cause anxiety. All scans are interpreted by consultant radiologists at the time of your appointment, and you will receive a verbal explanation immediately. A detailed written report will also be emailed to you on the same day as your appointment, so you have answers quickly.
What happens if my scan shows something that needs checking?
