Breast tissue is usually denser at younger ages, which makes ultrasound the most effective first step for assessment and reassurance.

40 and Over

Mammography is the standard first-line test for breast screening from around age 40 onwards, when it becomes more effective at detecting early changes.
Additional ultrasound may still be recommended depending on findings.
