Advanced 3D Breast Cancer Screening
A 3D mammogram (breast tomosynthesis) is an advanced digital X-ray technique that takes multiple low-dose images of the breast from different angles. These images are compiled into a 3D volume, allowing our consultant radiologists to scroll through breast tissue slice by slice. This eliminates tissue overlapping, which is the main cause of missed details on traditional 2D mammograms.
At LifeScan Breast Clinic in Naxxar, we combine 3D mammography with AI-assisted detection software, providing an extra safety layer. You receive same-day written reports for fast reassurance.
3D Tomosynthesis
Clearer Imaging
We scroll through breast tissue slice by slice to detect:
- Micro-calcifications (tiny calcium deposits, often the earliest sign of breast cancer)
- Small masses or structural distortions hidden behind overlapping tissue
- Enhanced screening for dense breast tissue compared to standard 2D scans
AI-Assisted Safety
Expert + Technology
We integrate modern diagnostic support tools:
- AI-assisted software analyzes the images alongside the radiologist
- Helps highlight subtle areas requiring closer attention
- Saves time and increases overall diagnostic confidence
Deodorants & Clothing Guidelines
- No Deodorant/Perfume: Please do not apply any deodorant, antiperspirant, body powder, perfume, or cream under your arms or on your breasts. These products can contain tiny metal particles that appear as calcium spots on the X-ray.
- Two-Piece Outfit: Wear a two-piece outfit (e.g., top and trousers) so you only need to undress from the waist up.
- Timing: For pre-menopausal women, the best time to scan is 7 to 10 days after your period starts, when breasts are least tender.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about 3D Mammogram Tomosynthesis.
What is the difference between 2D and 3D mammograms?
A 2D mammogram takes flat images from the front and side. A 3D mammogram takes images from multiple angles to reconstruct a 3D model, allowing the radiologist to look 'inside' the tissue layers, reducing false alarms and improving cancer detection.
Does the mammogram hurt?
Brief compression is required for a few seconds per view. This can feel tight or uncomfortable but should not be painful. Our radiographers are highly trained to perform the scan gently.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
No, women over 40 can self-refer for routine screening mammograms.
