Professional Breast Diagnostics & Implant Assessment
A breast ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to generate detailed images of the breast tissue and underarm (axilla) areas. Because it uses no radiation, it is completely safe and is the primary imaging choice for evaluating breast concerns in women under 40, as well as a vital diagnostic supplement to mammograms in older women with dense breasts.
At LifeScan Malta, breast scans are performed by consultant radiologists with specialized breast imaging experience. You will receive real-time explanation of your scan and a detailed written report on the same day.
Lump & Tissue Evaluation
Diagnostic Imaging
We assess the structures of the breast tissue to evaluate:
- Breast lumps (distinguishing fluid-filled cysts from solid tissue masses)
- Areas of focal tenderness, pain, or localized skin changes
- Axillary lymph nodes (checking for enlargement or inflammatory features)
- Nipple changes, subareolar ducts, or nipple discharge
Implant Integrity Check
Breast Implant Surveillance
For women with silicone or saline implants, we screen for:
- Silent rupture (extracapsular or intracapsular implant leakage)
- Peri-implant fluid collections (seromas) or capsular changes
- Implant positioning, folding, or tissue reaction
Minimal Preparation Needed
- Deodorants & Lotions: Please do not apply deodorants, antiperspirants, powders, creams, or lotions to your breasts or underarm areas on the day of the scan, as they can interfere with imaging.
- Clothing: Wear a comfortable two-piece outfit (like a top and skirt/trousers) so you only need to undress from the waist up. A private room is provided.
- Duration: The scan is painless and takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about Breast Ultrasound.
Is ultrasound better than a mammogram?
They are complementary. Ultrasound is excellent for women under 40 (due to denser breast tissue) and for distinguishing cysts from solid lumps. Mammography (X-ray) is the standard screening tool for women over 40 to detect tiny calcium deposits.
Does a breast ultrasound hurt?
No. The scan is completely painless. It involves applying warm gel and moving a smooth handheld probe across the skin. There is no compression.
How often should I check my breast implants?
Many plastic surgeons recommend checking breast implants with ultrasound every 1-2 years, starting 5 years after surgery, to monitor for silent rupture.
