Advanced Venous Circulation and DVT Diagnostics

A venous Doppler ultrasound scan (also known as a venous duplex scan) is a diagnostic test used to evaluate the veins in your legs. It combines traditional ultrasound imaging (to visualize vein structure) with color Doppler technology (to measure the direction and speed of blood flow). It is primarily used to check for blood clots (DVT) or to find the cause of varicose veins and leg swelling.

At LifeScan Clinic in Naxxar, our specialist consultant radiologists perform venous Doppler scans in a comfortable clinical setting, providing immediate verbal feedback and a formal diagnostic report on the same day.

DVT Screening

Deep Vein Thrombosis

We check the deep venous system to rule out or monitor blood clots:

  • Assessment of compressibility of the deep femoral and popliteal veins
  • Detection of acute or chronic blood clots (thrombi) blocking venous flow
  • Emergency reporting: if a DVT is found, the radiologist will coordinate immediate medical care

Varicose Vein Assessment

Venous Insufficiency

We examine the superficial veins to map blood flow direction:

  • Checking the valves in the long and short saphenous veins
  • Detecting venous reflux (blood flowing backwards, causing swelling/varicose veins)
  • Mapping veins prior to varicose vein treatments or surgery

Zero Preparation Required

  • No Fasting: You can eat, drink, and take medications normally prior to the scan.
  • Clothing: Wear loose trousers or shorts. You will need to expose your leg from the groin to the ankle. A private scanning room and clinical sheet are provided.
  • Duration: The scan is painless and takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes per leg.
