Specialist Musculoskeletal and Soft Tissue Diagnostics

A musculoskeletal (MSK) and soft tissue ultrasound scan is a highly detailed imaging test used to evaluate muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and soft tissue structures. It is the primary tool for assessing sports injuries, unexplained joint pain, suspected groin or abdominal wall hernias, and superficial lumps under the skin.

At LifeScan Malta, our consultant radiologists perform high-resolution MSK scanning in real-time, allowing for dynamic assessment (moving the joint during the scan) to see how structures perform under stress. A formal report is issued on the same day.

Joint & Tendon (MSK)

Sports Injuries & Pain

We scan targeted joints (shoulder, knee, ankle, elbow, wrist) to evaluate:

  • Tendonitis, tendinopathy, or tendon tears (e.g., rotator cuff or Achilles)
  • Joint inflammation, effusion (fluid build-up), or bursitis
  • Ligament sprains or superficial muscle tears

Lumps & Hernias

Groin, Wall & Subcutaneous

We assess soft tissues and hernia sites:

  • Groin hernias (inguinal/femoral) or abdominal hernias (epigastric/umbilical)
  • Superficial skin/subcutaneous lumps (lipomas, sebaceous cysts, or ganglion cysts)
  • Dynamic testing: scanning while you strain (Valsalva maneuver) to visualize hernias popping out

Zero Preparation Required

  • No Fasting: You can eat and drink normally prior to your appointment.
  • Clothing: Wear loose clothing that allows easy access to the joint, limb, or abdominal area being scanned. A clinical gown will be provided if needed.
  • Duration: The scan takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Joints / Lumps / Hernia (MSK) Ultrasound.

What is a dynamic ultrasound? +

It is a technique where the radiologist scans your joint while you bend or rotate it, or scans your abdomen while you cough. This is extremely useful for detecting hernias or tendon impingements that only appear with movement.

Can ultrasound check for a lipoma? +

Yes. Ultrasound is the gold standard for characterizing soft tissue lumps. It can clearly identify lipomas (benign fatty lumps) and distinguish them from fluid-filled cysts or solid tumours.

Do I need to prepare for a groin hernia scan? +

No preparation is required. The radiologist will scan the groin while you are lying down and standing up, and will ask you to push down or cough to check for hernia protrusion.
