High-resolution musculoskeletal (MSK) scanning for children.

Joints / Lumps / Hernia (MSK) Ultrasound (Paeds)

High-resolution musculoskeletal (MSK) scanning for children.

A safe, pain-free ultrasound scan to evaluate childhood joint pains, suspected muscle sprains, groin hernias, or superficial lumps.

Book your child's MSK, lump, or hernia ultrasound below.

Gentle Paediatric Musculoskeletal Diagnostics

Children are highly active and frequently experience muscle strains, joint swelling, or develop superficial lumps under the skin. Groin and belly button hernias are also common developmental conditions. A paediatric musculoskeletal (MSK) and soft tissue ultrasound provides a safe, radiation-free, and dynamic method to evaluate these areas.

At LifeScan Malta, our consultant radiologists perform high-resolution scans in a calm environment, allowing us to watch joints and muscles move in real-time. A formal diagnostic report is issued on the same day.

Joint & Injury (MSK)

Joint Pain & Sprains

We check joints (hips, knees, ankles, elbows) and limbs in children:

  • Evaluating joint effusions (fluid build-up, common in transient synovitis of the hip)
  • Investigating muscle tears, tendon pulls, or superficial ligament sprains
  • Checking for bony cortex irregularities (early signs of stress fractures)

Lumps & Hernias

Umbilical, Groin & Cysts

We screen for soft tissue lumps and hernia protrusions:

  • Umbilical hernias (belly button bulge) or inguinal hernias (groin bulge)
  • Superficial subcutaneous lumps (lipomas, sebaceous cysts, or ganglion cysts)
  • Dynamic scanning: observing the hernia bulge while the child cries or coughs

Zero Preparation Required

  • No Fasting: Your child can eat and drink normally prior to the appointment.
  • Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothes. Dress your child in a way that allows easy access to the area being scanned (e.g., shorts for knee/hip scans).
  • Duration: The scan is painless and takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Joints / Lumps / Hernia (MSK) Ultrasound (Paeds).

What is transient synovitis ('irritable hip')? +

It is a common, benign cause of sudden hip pain and limping in children, usually following a viral infection. Ultrasound is the gold standard for diagnosis because it can clearly show fluid inside the hip joint.

Can the scan check for an umbilical hernia? +

Yes. Ultrasound is excellent at measuring the size of the umbilical ring defect and checking whether fat or bowel is protruding through it.

Is the scan painful? +

No. The scan is completely non-invasive and painless. It involves warm gel and a smooth probe.
