Thorough Urinary and Pelvic Diagnostic Scanning

A urinary tract and pelvic ultrasound scan evaluates the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and pelvic organs (uterus and ovaries in women, or prostate in men). It is widely used to investigate urinary symptoms like pain (dysuria), blood in urine (haematuria), high frequency, or pelvic discomfort.

Performed by specialist consultant radiologists at our Naxxar clinic, this diagnostic scan provides real-time images and an immediate written report on the same day, helping guide clinical decisions quickly.

Renal & Urinary Tract

Kidneys & Bladder

We assess the upper and lower urinary tracts to identify:

  • Kidney stones (nephrolithiasis) or bladder stones
  • Hydronephrosis (fluid backing up in the kidney)
  • Cysts, solid nodules, or renal masses
  • Bladder wall thickness and bladder diverticula

Pelvic Organs & Pre/Post-Void

Uterus, Ovaries or Prostate

We examine pelvic organs and bladder function:

  • Pre-void and post-void residual bladder volume (checking for urinary retention)
  • Uterus and ovaries (screening for fibroids, lining thickness, and cysts)
  • Prostate gland size and shape (transabdominally in men)

Full Bladder Required

  • Drinking Instructions: Please drink 500ml of plain water about 45 to 60 minutes before your scan time.
  • Do Not Empty Bladder: Do not pass urine before your appointment. A full bladder is essential to act as an acoustic window and to evaluate bladder volume accurately.
  • Fasting: No fasting is required; you may eat and drink normally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Complete Urinary Tract & Pelvic Ultrasound.

Why do I need a full bladder for this scan? +

A full bladder pushes overlying bowel out of the way and acts as a clear 'acoustic window' through which ultrasound waves can pass to clearly visualize pelvic organs and bladder walls.

How long does the urinary tract ultrasound take? +

The scan takes around 20 minutes, including a brief break to empty your bladder for the post-void residual scan.

Can it diagnose kidney stones? +

Yes. Ultrasound is highly sensitive at detecting kidney stones, especially those obstructing urine flow, as well as bladder stones.
