Comfortable Transabdominal Prostate Diagnostics
A prostate ultrasound scan evaluates the size, shape, and structure of the prostate gland in Men's Health. At LifeScan Malta, this scan is performed **transabdominally** (through the lower abdomen wall), which is a comfortable and non-invasive alternative to transrectal scanning, while still providing detailed diagnostic information.
Typically requested to investigate symptoms like weak urine flow, frequent urination (especially at night), or a raised PSA blood test, this scan includes a full bladder retention assessment reported on the same day by our consultant radiologists.
Prostate & Bladder Scan
Size & Structure
We assess the lower urinary tract and prostate gland to evaluate:
- Prostate gland volume (measuring width, height, and length in grams/cc)
- Signs of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) or nodular enlargement
- Bladder wall thickness, screening for signs of urinary straining
Retention Volume Check
Pre- & Post-Void Measurements
We measure how effectively the bladder empties:
- Pre-void bladder volume: scanning while the bladder is full
- Post-void bladder volume: scanning immediately after you empty your bladder
- Calculating the residual urine volume to check for incomplete emptying
Full Bladder Required
- Drinking Instructions: Please drink 500ml of plain water 45 to 60 minutes prior to your appointment.
- Do Not Empty Bladder: Do not empty your bladder before the scan starts, as a full bladder is needed to view the prostate transabdominally.
- Fasting: No fasting is required.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about Prostate Ultrasound.
Is a transabdominal prostate scan painful?
No. Unlike a transrectal scan, a transabdominal ultrasound is completely painless and external. It only requires a full bladder for clear imaging.
What is BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia)?
BPH is a common, non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that occurs as men age. It can compress the urethra and cause urinary symptoms.
Does the scan screen for prostate cancer?
While ultrasound measures size and detects gross nodules or structural abnormalities, it cannot definitively rule out early prostate cancer. It is best interpreted alongside a PSA blood test.
