Pick your own time slot online, 24/7.
Your Full DEXA Picture in a Single Appointment
This option combines our two DEXA scans. The whole body composition scan measures body fat, lean muscle mass, visceral and subcutaneous fat, and whole-body bone density. The traditional bone density scan measures bone mineral density at the lumbar spine and hip, the internationally recognised sites for diagnosing and monitoring osteoporosis.
Both scans are done in the same sitting and you receive a separate report for each. You then sit down with our consultant radiologist, who walks you through your results and answers your questions in person.
Whole Body Composition
Fat, Muscle & Bone
Your first report covers:
- Body fat percentage, and fat and lean mass in each arm, leg and the trunk
- Visceral (deep abdominal) and subcutaneous fat
- A whole-body bone density measurement
Hip & Spine Bone Density
Osteoporosis Assessment
Your second report covers:
- Bone mineral density at the lumbar spine and hip (femoral neck and total hip)
- T-scores and Z-scores for each site
- Results suitable for diagnosis, fracture risk assessment and comparison with previous scans
Preparing for Your Scan
- Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing without metal zips, buttons, poppers or underwiring. A gown is available if needed.
- No calcium supplements: do not take calcium supplements or calcium-containing antacids on the morning of your scan, as undigested tablets can interfere with the spine measurement.
- Previous results: bring any earlier bone density reports so the radiologist can compare them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about Combined DEXA Whole Body & Bone Density.
Why have both scans?
They answer different questions. Body composition shows your fat, muscle and overall bone mass, which is useful for metabolic health, fitness and weight management. The hip and spine bone density scan is the standard test for diagnosing and monitoring osteoporosis. Having both gives you the complete picture.
Do I get two reports?
Yes. The traditional hip and spine bone density scan has its own separate report, alongside your body composition report.
Is a consultation included?
Yes. After your scans you have a one-on-one consultation with our consultant radiologist, who explains your results and answers any questions.
Is the radiation dose safe?
Yes. DEXA uses a very low dose of X-rays, far lower than a standard chest X-ray, even with both scans combined.
Can I claim this on my health insurance?
Your insurer may require a referral letter from your GP or another doctor who is not the radiologist you are seeing before they will reimburse the visit. If you plan to claim, please check with your insurer before your appointment, as claims without a valid referral may be declined.
