Whole-Body DEXA Without the Consultation

DEXA Express gives you the same full body composition scan as our consultation option: body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, visceral and subcutaneous fat, and a whole-body bone density measurement.

The difference is what happens afterwards. Instead of sitting down with the radiologist, you leave straight after your scan, and a detailed, easy-to-read personalised report is emailed to you. Because there is no consultation, there are also more appointment times to choose from.

Preparing for Your Scan

  • Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing without metal zips, buttons, poppers or underwiring. A gown is available if needed.
  • Hydration & diet: Keep to your normal routine. If you are tracking changes over time, try to scan at a similar time of day and under similar food and drink conditions each time.
  • Hip and spine bone density: if you specifically need a dedicated hip and spine bone density assessment (for example, to compare with a previous bone density scan), tell the radiographer when you arrive and they will perform that scan instead.
  • The scan itself takes only a few minutes. You lie still on a padded table while the scanner arm passes over you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about DEXA Express.

What is the difference between DEXA Express and DEXA + Consultation?+

The scan is the same. With DEXA + Consultation you go through your results face to face with our consultant radiologist. With DEXA Express there is no consultation: your detailed report is emailed to you instead, and there are more appointment times available.

Which option should I choose for my first scan?+

If this is your first DEXA scan, or you would like your results explained in person, DEXA + Consultation is usually the better choice. DEXA Express suits people who are comfortable reading their own report, or who are tracking progress after a previous scan.

Does DEXA Express include a hip and spine bone density scan?+

It includes a whole-body bone density measurement. If you specifically need the traditional hip and spine bone density assessment, let the radiographer know when you arrive and they will perform that scan instead. If you would like both in one visit, see our Combined Whole Body & Bone Density option.

Is the radiation dose safe?+

Yes. A DEXA scan uses a very low dose of X-rays, far lower than a standard chest X-ray.

Can I claim this on my health insurance?+

Your insurer may require a referral letter from your GP or another doctor who is not the radiologist you are seeing before they will reimburse the visit. If you plan to claim, please check with your insurer before your appointment, as claims without a valid referral may be declined.
