Precision Ultrasound-Guided Fluid Drainage
A fluid accumulation in a joint (effusion) or a fluid-filled sac (cyst or bursa) can cause swelling, pressure, and localized pain. An ultrasound-guided aspiration uses real-time imaging to guide a thin needle directly into the fluid collection, allowing the consultant radiologist to drain the fluid safely and completely.
At LifeScan Clinic in Naxxar, this therapeutic procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, ensuring complete comfort, immediate pressure relief, and a diagnostic report on the same day.
Therapeutic Drainage
Cysts & Joint Effusions
We perform precise aspirations to drain fluid from:
- Joint effusions (e.g. fluid build-up in the knee, elbow, or shoulder)
- Symptomatic breast cysts or ganglionic soft tissue cysts
- Inflamed bursae (bursitis) containing painful fluid build-up
Ultrasound Guidance
Maximum Safety & Comfort
We ensure precise targeting using real-time imaging:
- Visualizing the needle path and fluid pocket at every millimeter
- Targeted local anaesthesia to numb the skin and deeper tissues
- Drained fluid can be sent to histopathology for analysis if requested
Preparation & Blood Thinner Guidelines
- Blood Thinners: Please inform our clinic if you are taking blood-thinning medications (such as Warfarin, Clopidogrel, or Apixaban), as you may need to pause them before the procedure.
- Fasting: No fasting is required; you may eat and drink normally prior to your appointment.
- Post-Care: We recommend resting the joint and avoiding heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for 48 hours after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about Ultrasound-Guided Aspiration/Drainage.
Is the aspiration painful?
We apply a local anaesthetic to numb the skin and deeper tissues. You may feel a brief sting during the anaesthetic injection, but the aspiration itself is typically comfortable.
Will the fluid return?
Cysts or joint effusions can sometimes recur. Draining the fluid provides immediate relief, and if needed, the radiologist can discuss combining the aspiration with a steroid injection to prevent fluid build-up.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
We welcome self-referrals for cyst and joint fluid drainage, alongside referrals from family doctors and specialists.
