Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about adult ultrasound procedures, preparation, and booking.
Do I need a doctor's referral to book an adult ultrasound?
No, a doctor's referral is not required. You can self-refer for any of our diagnostic or screening ultrasound scans. We will provide you with a detailed clinical report that you can share with your doctor.
What preparation is required before my ultrasound?
Preparation depends on the type of scan. Abdominal scans generally require fasting (no food or drink except water) for 4 hours prior. Pelvic and urinary tract scans require a full bladder (drinking 500ml of water 45 minutes prior). MSK, breast, and neck scans require no special preparation.
How long does a scan take and when will I get the results?
Most scans take between 15 and 30 minutes. The consultant radiologist will explain findings to you in real-time during the scan, and a formal written diagnostic report is completed and emailed to you on the same day.
Who performs the ultrasound scans at LifeScan?
All ultrasound scans at LifeScan Clinic Malta are performed and interpreted directly by registered, specialist consultant radiologists who are medical doctors, ensuring the highest standards of diagnostic accuracy.
